A group of 50 white collar corrupt mathematicians (corrupt accountants, sleazy statisticians, etc) arrive together in a special prison. They aren't told how long they'll be there, but they're told how to get out. On the day of their arrival, each mathematicians has a colored spot tattooed in the middle of his back. The tattoo is either black or red. He isn't told which color he has, but he is told that all 100 prisoners have such a spot and that they aren't all the same color. He's then put in an isolated room, where he will spend the rest of his prison term in solitary confinement. One wall of the room contains 99 recessed video monitors and the opposite wall a small video camera. On the morning of the last day of each year served, these will become active. Each prisoner will strip to the waist in front of the camera and face the video screens, where he will find displayed the bare backs of the other 99 prisoners. He's given 1 minute to note the colors of the spots on the backs displayed. The cameras then become inactive and the screens go dark for another year. His task then is to determine the color of his own spot using pure logic. Once he knows for a fact what his color is, he informs the warden and is released from prison that very day.

The warden meets with 23 new prisoners when they arrive. He tells them, "You may meet today and plan a strategy. But after today, you will be in isolated cells and will have no communication with one another. "In the prison is a switch room, which contains two light switches labeled 1 and 2, each of which can be in either up or the down position. I am not telling you their present positions. The switches are not connected to anything. "After today, from time to time whenever I feel so inclined, I will select one prisoner at random and escort him to the switch room. This prisoner will select one of the two switches and reverse its position. He must flip one switch when he visits the switch room, and may only flip one of the switches. Then he'll be led back to his cell. "No one else will be allowed to alter the switches until I lead the next prisoner into the switch room. I'm going to choose prisoners at random. I may choose the same guy three times in a row, or I may jump around and come back. I will not touch the switches, if I wanted you dead you would already be dead.

An employer asked to 100 of its employee to line them up and he will place either a red or blue hat on each of their heads. Once lined up, they must not communicate amongst themselves. Nor may they attempt to look behind them or remove their own hat.
The employee will be able to see all the hats in front of them. They will not be able to see the color of their own hat or the hats behind them, although they will be able to hear the answers from all those behind them.
The HR will then start with the first employee at the back and ask "what color is your hat?" The man will only be allowed to answer "red" or "blue," nothing more. If the answer is incorrect then the man will be silently fired. If the answer is correct then the that man may work with the company but must remain absolutely silent.
The manager will then move on to the next man and repeat the question. |

The parrot sequence
Janco owns a clever parrot called Paco which can describe out loud numbers read from a piece of paper displayed in front of him. One day Janco tried this funny experiment: he wrote the digit 1 on a sheet and showed it to Paco, who answered “one 1”. Janco wrote down the parrot’s answer “one 1” or ‘11’ on a new sheet and showed it to Paco, who readily answered “two 1’s”. Again, Janco wrote down his reply “two 1’s” or ‘21’ on another sheet and showed it to Paco, who replied “one 2, one 1” or ‘1211’... Janco continued this experiment until he obtained a long sequence of numbers 1, 11, 21, 1211, 111221, 312211, etc... in which each next term is obtained by describing the previous term.
Can you say how many sheets of paper Gaston will need until:
a) the string of digits 333 appears, or b) the digit 4 occurs in the sequence?
Can you also confirm that the last digit of any term of the parrot say is always 1?
PLease provide the answer in the disussion forums , I am still looking for the solution
